I feel it’s important that the Scottish Government hears what we think about climate change, so we can all work together to protect our planet.
Member of Children’s Parliament
Children’s Parliament’s Child Human Rights Defenders programme supports children to take part in democratic processes and advocate for their rights. Through this initiative, children engage directly with Scottish Government leaders, sharing their perspectives and influencing decisions on issues that matter most to them. A key focus of this work is climate justice, where children are helping to shape policies on climate education and Scotland’s response to the climate emergency.
Children’s Calls to Action on Climate Change
As part of this programme, children have set out clear Calls to Action:
Improved Government
Communication
- Children are worried about the climate crisis. They want to know about the impact of the climate crisis in Scotland, how it might affect them and their families and what Scottish Government are doing to mitigate it in both urban and rural environments.
- This needs to be done in a way that is accessible for all, so it is not too scary, but realistic.
Positive Climate Education
- Not all children are getting the same quality of climate crisis education or Learning for Sustainability.
- Children should be able to take part in real, local projects with real people to help make positive change. If they know they are helping, they might not feel so worried.
Involvement in our Learning
- Children should have a say in what they learn through climate crisis education, including being part of designing, building and caring for their school spaces.
