Do The Right Thing
In 2008 the Scottish Government produced ‘Do the Right Thing’ and identified areas where Scotland needs to make progress on implementing the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.
With the support of Scottish Government the Children’s Parliament has been facilitating Do the Right Thing Local Projects in Scottish Borders and Angus – raising awareness and creating opportunities for dialogue about the meaning of children’s human rights through work with children, parents and professionals.
The focus of our work has been on the nature of our personal and professional relationships and a commitment to learning about the meaning of children’s human rights and human dignity.
- Go here for more about children’s human rights and the idea of human dignity
- In their discussions children identified what human dignity means to them, they discussed what children need and they considered what responsibilities adults have towards children to ensure they live safe, happy and healthy lives. From our work in Scottish Borders with younger children these posters represent people who help us to be healthy, happy and safe.
- At the heart of our work and the Do the Right Thing Local Projects are a set of values and principles.
- We have been able to link learning from our pilot Local Projects to Do the Right Thing national priority actions.
- There is information here about who took part.
- Participant’s views: Children, parents and professionals told us what they thought about participation in their Do the Right Thing Local Project.
- A slideshow of this work is available in the Do the Right Thing GALLERY
Professional participants were also given a document Human rights belong to all of us.
Our thanks to colleagues, parents and children in Angus and Scottish Borders for their support for this work.
